QUESTIONS STUDENTS OFTEN ASK

What can I do with a degree in Physical and Health Education?

Certified athlete trainers (ATCs) work with high school, university, professional and even Olympic sports teams.  They also work in rehabilitation clinics, hospitals and other athletic rehabilitation venues.

What academic skills and strengths should I possess to be successful in physical and health education?

Athletic training is an allied health care profession.  As such, students pursuing this concentration must possess strong academic skills.  They must also possess the physical ability to perform tasks necessary to assess injuries and to provide emergency care and treatment to injured athletes.  Individuals must also have the personal communication skills needed to effectively elicit information from injured or ill athletes.

What are the academic requirements, such as grade point average or minimums to take fieldwork?

The minimum grade point average of 2.50 on all college work is required for admission into the athletic training education program.  In addition, students must pass all of their athletic training coursework with a “C” or better.

Admission into the Athletic Training Education Program is competitive.  Students should contact the Athletic Training Program Director for specific admissions requirements and course sequencing.

What courses may enhance my career opportunities in athletic training?

The competencies required to become an effective athletic trainer are met in the athletic training courses listed on the progression sheet for this concentration.  Students should make every effort to excel in these courses.

In addition to the required courses, students may wish to get additional certifications as a professional rescuer, lifeguard or an emergency medical technician.
