System 7.6 System Requirements

PPP Setup for the Macintosh running System 7.6x is very simple to do. All of the setup is done on the Control Panel using TCP/IP, PPP, and Remote Access Setup.

Setup of PPP on System 7.6

Under TCP/IP in the control panel, setup TCP/IP settings for your Mac. Follow these steps (refer to the screen capture for help):

1. Under "Connect via:" set to "PPP".

2. Under "Configure", set to "Using PPP Server". Keep the other options: IP Address, Router address, and Subnet Mask unchanged and are automatically set to ( will be supplied by server ).

3. Enter the DNS numbers in the "Name Server Addr." box exactly how they are listed. Those numbers are: 137.45.128.132, 137.45.128.4, 137.45.192.100.

4. Finally, for "Search Domains" enter in "runet.edu".

In the Control Panel, under PPP Setup enter in the following information. If you have not logged into your email account; please do that now not using PPP.

1. At the "Name:" box, enter in your userid (ex, mcanter).

2. At the "Password:" box, enter in your password for your userid. This will not be echoed to the screen. You will only receive black circles for your password; this is normal.

3. At the "Number:" box, enter in the telephone number: 633-1894. If you are calling in from Roanoke, the number is: 857-8923.

4. If you select "Save password" you will not be prompted for reentering your password every time you login to PPP.

In the Control Panel, under Remote Access Setup tells your Macintosh which type of modem you have installed. This might be done automatically, but just in case, here's how.

1. At "Port:" specify either "Modem Port" or "Printer Port" corresponding with which port your modem is plugged into.

2. At "Modem:" select your type of modem. Although you can use a 14.4kbs modem, we recommend that you use 28.8kbs modems or greater.

Note: All of the other selections are optional.

You might want to restart the machine just to make sure all the changes you have made to the system have been updated. This is not a requirement though.

Now you should be all set to go with the Mac PPP. Simply go back to PPP under the Control Panel and click on "Connect". Your modem will then dial and your PPP connection will start. After this you can run Netscape, telnet, Eudora, etc...
