Modern biological research is often exceedingly quantitative and can require mathematical modeling, computational or informatics approaches, or complex statistical analyses. Modern biology education has not  

kept pace with the skills required of practicing scientists, and students may not appreciate why mathematics and statistics are important for their future.

 

Here I provide an example of how image analysis can be used to capture student's interest and teach

quantitative skills in an engaging way. The idea is simply to use fascinating pictures and biological stories to motivate students to learn the quantitative skills they need.
