Upcoming Events
Fall 2007
"Astronomy Night" will begin this month on the 12th. We will assemble around 8:30pm in Moffet to set up our equipment. Astronomy Nights will occur monthly, falling on either the 3rd or 4rth Wed (depending on clarity of the night sky).
Our next club meeting is Wednesday, September 19th. This will be 1pm in Reed 119. The focus of this meeting is to organize our participation in the montly RU Astronomy Nights, and help new members get aquainted. All meetings are held bi-weekly, at 5pm in Reed 119. Physics & Astro usually meets with SPS, due to the similarities in membership and mutual interests of both organizations. If interested in joining, or for more information on Phys & Astro, feel free to attend.
Hopefully by September we will begin another year of movie nights in the planetarium. The movies will be shown in the RU Planetarium at 8pm, on a bi-weekly basis. Our next movie night is September 23rd, 8pm in the Planetarium.
Soon this semester, Phys & Astro hopes to bring Radford's first ever series of Public Observing Nights. These will take place in the Selu Observatory . Each Public Observing Night will entail free access to the Physics Department's fully automated Newtonian-mount telescope. In addition, there will be multiple portable Dobsonian-mounts availible for everyone to enjoy. For more information, please contact Dr. Rhett Herman.
Were not entirely sure, but we believe the New River Race will be held again this fall. The race features candidates building man-powered boats in a 1/4mile race downstream. Last year, we constructed a pontoon-sailboat dubbed the "SPS J-RON". The J-RON crushed the competition, and we hope to due so this year as well.
Spring 2008
By Jan we hope to have our SPS Lecture Series up and running again. More information will be posted as details develop.
The Spring semester is usually when the big, official club trip(s) take place. Among the candidates are: Greenbank Radio Observatory, Udvar-Hazy Smithsonian display, NASA at Langley AFB and others. If you have any suggestions, fell free to mention them at meetings or mail them to physclub@radford.edu.
