Jackie Clouse Snell MS, ATC
Head Athletic Trainer

Greetings from the Radford University Athletic Training Staff. This is my 18th year here, and I still love this place as much as I did when I first came as a graduate assistant in August of 1983. At that time I had just received my Bachelor of Science degree in Health Education and Athletic Training from Ohio University.  I completed my Master of Science degree in Physical and Health Education in the summer of 1984 here at RU. That was an exciting summer for me, because not only did I finish my Master’s degree, but I also passed the national certification exam for athletic training, and was appointed Head Athletic Trainer for RU! I was flying high! Then reality set in…(just kidding!)

In addition to athletic training, I teach a course or two every year in the Physical Education department. There are going to be some big changes in this department as Athletic Training will become a major, and we will seek accreditation for the Athletic Training Education program. This has been in the works for years, but with the addition of a new Athletic Training Education Program Director, Angela Mickle, I believe it is really going to happen. We will work closely to ensure that the NATA requirements are fulfilled, while still giving the student athletic trainers (SAT’s) the same types of experiences our former SAT’s enjoyed!

I also serve as Senior Woman Administrator in the Athletic Department. This gives me the opportunity to work with administrators, coaches, and the student athletes from a different perspective. I actually get to deal with healthy, uninjured people some of the time with this job!

I like to "blame" all of the long work hours on stunting my personal life! But Max (the man I dated for 10 ½ years!) and I did make time to get married in November of 2000. Our wedding day was the happiest day of my life! He is a wonderful man who grew up in Radford, and now works in Blacksburg. He understands my crazy life and schedule (or rather "lack of" a consistent schedule). We live in the same house in Dublin that I’ve lived in for 10 years. It’s much more a home now with him there! For those of you who knew my dog "BO", he passed away suddenly this past summer. He was a great companion for me for 9 years, and I truly miss him.

It has been exciting to watch the growth of our intercollegiate athletics program. My job has brought me encounters with many extraordinary people, both on the field/court, and off. I believe that it is the people I work with, not the material things that we have or don’t have, that make this a wonderful place to work. I hope to stay an active part of RU, and RU Athletics for many years to come.

Kari Whitney, BS, ATC
Assistant Athletic Trainer

Hi ! Thank you for taking the time to find out what Radford University’s Athletic Training Program has to offer. For me, Radford has been a great place to begin my career as an Athletic Trainer and a Softball Coach. I started working here as the Assistant Softball Coach in July 2001 and a month later I was hired as an Assistant Athletic Trainer.  Since last year my job status has changed from working part- time softball and part- time training room to full- time Assistant Athletic Trainer.

Originally, I am from Roanoke, VA. I graduated from Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia and got my B.S. in Sports Medicine in May of 2000. While at Roanoke, I was the Student Athletic Trainer for the Women’s Basketball, Soccer, Field Hockey, and Softball Teams. During my four years at Roanoke, I had the opportunity to work many of the different Championships held in Salem every year.  Over the years I worked various National Championships for Football, Basketball, and Softball… with the exception of not being able to work the Softball Championships my senior year because my team was competing for the National title in our own town!!!  We ended up finishing the year sixth in the nation! I guess to explain the last couple of statements I made about softball I should say that I played third base on the Softball Team all four years at Roanoke, so between the fall and spring seasons and working as a Student Athletic Trainer for other teams, I stayed busy with sports!

After graduation, I stayed in Salem and took a job at Roanoke College until I found something in Athletic Training or Coaching. During that year I was an Assistant Softball Coach and the Games Management Director at Roanoke. One year later, I found the ideal opportunity for me at Radford University!

My family now lives in Elliston which is only about 15 minutes away from where I live, so I am close to them and I have had the opportunity to work as both a Softball Coach and an Athletic Trainer here at Radford.   After my first year of working both jobs I decided to take the full- time Assistant Athletic Training position.  Along with working here at Radford I work as an Emergency Medical Technician for Lifeline Ambulance and am a volunteer member at the Christiansburg Rescue Squad.  I currently live in Christiansburg with my two dogs J.J. and Kali.

Joe Witt, MS, ATC
Assistant Athletic Trainer

Starting my first year at Radford University but returning to the New River Valley.  I received my Bachelor of Science Degree in Health and Physical Education with a concentration in Athletic Training at Roanoke College in 1988.  While there I worked with several O.D.A.C. championship and N.C.A.A. tournament qualifiers.

From there I traveled south to obtain my Masters Degree in Sport Management at Virginia Tech., completing my degree in February of 1991.  While there I worked as a certified athletic trainer with the football team and one season with the women’s basketball team.

After finishing my course work at Tech, I was fortunate enough to work preseason camp with the Buffalo Bills during their first Super Bowl year.  I was on the sidelines for all preseason games as well as the first regular season game versus the colts.

Next up was Austin Peay State University in Tennessee.  As an assistant I was in charge of the men’s basketball and baseball teams.  Moving right along I returned to the great commonwealth where I was named Head Athletic Trainer at Mary Baldwin College.  I spent six years there covering all sports.  At this time I also used my sport management degree as I served as an athletic facility director, sports information director and was also an adjunct instructor.

Overworked and underpaid I jumped at the chance to intern at Virginia Commonwealth University.  I was in charge of the men’s soccer team as well as the NCAA regional finalist Baseball team.  The team beat LSU in Baton Rouge forcing a final game against the eventual regional champs.

With that great experience over, I tried my hand at the high school level.  I worked at a small rural high school where I learned that college is where I belong, thus my return to the New River Valley and Radford University!
