Setting up Dial-Up Networking
At this point, you should have installed all of the software necessary to establish the network connection. Thus, you are now ready to configure Dial-Up Networking to connect to the Radford University modem pool. In order to do this, you should click the "Start" button, then select "Programs", then select "Accessories", and finally "Dial-Up Networking".
You should see the "Welcome to Dial-Up Networking" window pictured below. Click on the "Next>" button. If you do not get this window, double-click on the "Make New Connection" icon in the "Dial-Up Networking" window.
Upon completing either of the above two options you should see the "Make New Connection" window. Place your cursor in the "Type a name for the computer you are dialing" box. Enter "Radford University". You should already see your model of modem listed in the "Select a modem" box.
Click the "Next>" button.
On the following window, enter "540" in the "Area code:" box. Enter "633-1894" for the phone number if you are off campus. If you are on campus and using the University phone system enter "9,633-1894" for the phone number. This number will connect you to Radford Universitys high-speed modem bank.
Click on the "Next>" button.
If you have completed the above steps correctly you should see the following window informing you that you have successfully created a new dial-up networking connection. Click on the "Finish" button. You have now created a "Radford University" icon in your "Dial-Up Networking" window.
The final step in setting up dial-up networking is to configure the server types. Open your "Dial-Up Networking" window. If you are performing this step immediately after completing the previous steps, the window should be open. Otherwise, open the window by clicking the "Start" button, selecting "Programs", selecting "Accessories", and finally "Dial-Up Networking".
Once the window is open select the "Radford University" icon by clicking on it once with your left mouse button.
Click on the "File" menu and select "Properties".
The window shown below should appear complete with the information you entered in the previous steps. Click on the "Server Type" button located immediately below the box containing the model of your modem.
In the "Server Types" window that appears, remove the checkmarks next to "Log on to network", "Enable software compression", "NetBEUI", and "IPX/SPX Compatible" by clicking on the box adjacent to these items. Verify that "TCP/IP" is the only item checked. Click on the "TCP/IP Settings" button.
You must verify that the TCP/IP settings selected match those pictured below. If everything has been done correctly these items should already be selected. Make necessary changes to this screen by clicking in the circles or the boxes next to appropriate items. Once you have selected the correct items, click on the "OK" button.
Congratulations! You are now ready to connect Radford Universitys system. Go to part IV.
